ABOUT

Recently appointed Dudamel Fellow for the 23/24 season by Los Angeles Philharmonic, Colombian conductor and composer Carlos Ágreda has quickly started to build a reputation for his dynamic leadership on and off the podium and broad repertoire.

Also finalist of the first edition of the International Conducting Competition Rotterdam, Carlos first came to international attention when he reached the third round in the Cadaqués International Conducting Competition at the age of 22, the youngest of the seven short-listed candidates.  Carlos was formerly Conducting Fellow at the Curtis Institute of Music under the mentorship of Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and recently the Music Director of the Empire State Youth Orchestra in  New York, USA.

Named as one of the 50 Most Creative People by Forbes Magazine Colombia, Carlos is noted for his special ability to inspire audiences and musicians. Carlos has worked with different orchestras in Europe, Latin America and the United States, including the BBC Philharmonic, Opera Philadelphia, and the Colombia National Symphony, and he has collaborated closely with world-renowned artists such as Juanjo Mena, Andrés Orozco Estrada, Michael Tilson Thomas, Cristian Macelaru, to name a few.

Carlos is an advocate for musical versatility and the celebration of the diversity of symphonic music and his musical interests and repertoire also include opera, choral music, contemporary and American/Latin-American music. His approach to new music has been developed by conducting more than 30 world premieres in the United States, Colombia, and the United Kingdom. For instance, his interests have taken Carlos to participate in innovative projects such as the Filarmónica Joven de Colombia, which is a very special project as this is the first Colombian orchestra in history to perform at venues such as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Vienna Konzerthaus, Berlin Konzerthaus, and the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie. Most recently, Carlos conducted the 2022 National tour of this orchestra and also conducted performances at the Rheingau Musik Festival in Germany.

Carlos was born in Bogota, Colombia, where studied conducting, piano, and composition at the Juan N. Corpas University. Carlos also holds a Master’s Degree from the Royal Northern College of Music’s prestigious conducting program before taking up the Conducting  Fellowship at the world-renowned Curtis Institute of Music.
